Chicago Outpatient Clinics,

Get excited, it’s mass distribution time!  Antimicrobial Stewardship Educational Binders are coming to a Chicago Clinic/Practice near you!  During the months of August and September 2019, ~250 “Clinical” Binders will be distributed by our partners at Mesmerize Marketing to urgent care, primary care, family practice and internal medicine clinics throughout the 77 neighborhoods of our City.  If your practice did not receive supplies and wanted the free, CDC-funded clinical materials (binders, brochures and posters) – please contact me at so your clinic/practice can be added to the “re-fresh” list come Fall prior to the U.S. CDC Antibiotic Awareness Week November 18-24th, 2019. We’re considering CDC Script Pads for the “Watch and Wait” or “Delayed Prescribing” methodologies with the encore in a few months, but would like your input on what customizable tools for wise use of antibiotics would fit best in your practice so we can start the planning now, and most appropriately.

In addition to the ~250 “Clinical” Binders, this Campaign will also distribute ~200 “Dental” Binders that feature similar CDC 4 Core Element Chapters + Chicago Department of Public Health (CDPH) developed supplemental materials with an Orthodontic twist!  The meat of the binder showcases both the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) created Primary Care Provider Antimicrobial Stewardship Toolkit and Dental Antimicrobial Stewardship Toolkits in each binder, respectively.  We’re proud of our colleagues close to home at the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) for paving the way in an innovative, up-and-coming niche area for Antimicrobial Stewards, the Dental Space.

Next steps, you might ask?  You’ve received materials, your practice is motivated to do more and make an impactful difference, and now what?  It’s the rate-limiting step that pumps the brakes on the Stewardship Over-achievers around town… Information Technology (IT)!  Just thinking about the time it takes to justify such partial and/or full FTEs to operationalize and increase efficiencies within your comprehensive Outpatient Antimicrobial Stewardship Program is exhausting… We get it.  If you jump to the bottom of this excellent editorial below, we’d like to give a solid Shout Out to the Griffin Myers (MD, co-founder and CMO of Oak Street Health in Chicago and abroad) that have honed in on sophisticated and automated methods to make the hassle of HEDIS an iteration of the past.   Don’t try to re-invent the wheel; discover who’s willing to share proprietary methods from the goodness of their stewardship-friendly hearts, and network smarter with quality improvement and infectious disease colleagues that have focused their professional careers in this arena.

Thanks for joining our mission to improve antimicrobial prescribing in our beautiful City, and we look forward to hearing your organization’s insightful feedback and achievements over the duration of this Campaign!

Best regards,

The Hospital Associated Infection / Antimicrobial Resistance (HAI/AR) Unit of CDPH
